Painting of Melanin/brown skin Girl Seating in Flowers on her knees with her bare skin

This piece is dear to me and one of my favorite. This took months to complete and it wasn't an easy piece to create as it was my first time panting such a figure in a huge scale. The beginning was frightening to me, and I feared I wasn't going to pull it off.

My initial idea was to paint a girl surrounded by flowers. I wanted to paint a brown girl calmly seated around nature and flowers. I also wanted the piece to have a very organic feel.

Despite having this idea, I needed something concrete to refer to. I needed to get my proportions, values shadows right so as per norm I went online to find a few references images. This process took forever as I couldn't find a proper reference that would help with my idea. I resorted to using more than one reference. It more like morphing ideas together and this wasn't easy at all.

I didn't know how the painting was going to turn out. I was using so many references and that was already a risk.

I found myself struggling with certain parts of the image especially the head. The scale wasn't just right. I kept going back and forth but it wasn't adding up so I decided to give the piece a rest. I covered it and didn't look at it for weeks.

I don't like giving up on a painting so I decided to unravel my painting. This time I unraveled the painting slowly, exposing each part at a time. This gave me ability to look at paint.

Painting in parts hence giving me ability to study each area without being overwhelmed by the whole painting. I finally managed to fix my proportions and got pass the block. After this everything went smoothly, the only challenge I had was to push myself through the painting process. I went at it daily, painting her face, arms, flowers and her background.

It was a pleasant surprise and I loved how everything came together.

LESSON LEARNED

The few lessons learned from creating this piece is the fact that I didn't quit. Even though the painting felt like a struggle from get go.

This piece taught me to keep pushing and never stop creating no matter how long it may take.

Here is a time-lapse video of me painting this beautiful piece. Enjoy
