Water Color Piece For Brown Skin Tone |
In the
above image I was experimenting with water colors for brown skin tone. I
decided to use my face as the case study to see if I’d get the skin tones right
and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I divided the image in four parts
to enable me to focus on the lighting and shadows of each part.

I started out by layering the base colors then going in with deeper colors towards the end of the painting. To
create this brown I used the primary colors which are red, blue and yellow in
different proportions. Some areas on the face are darker due to shadows while
other parts reflect light. Small details are important when painting a face because no face is the same color.

My first layers had more red and yellow mixed
with brown giving me the realistic results I was looking for in the end. It
took me approximately 18 hours to paint these, that’s excluding drying time.

These
paintings were done on a 180gsm watercolor paper and were taped down with
masking tape. The challenge I had with this paper was it tendency to buckle up,
though the paper straightened after it dried.
