MY ROSE : Acrylic Painting Time-Lapse || Flower Series

Melanin Skin tone and a White Rose

'My rose, even among many I see you. Even among beautiful roses I chose you. Even though you might resemble others I cherish you'

Melanin Skin tone and a White Rose

Painting flowers has always fascinated me and I've always been drawn to paint them. Despite the urge to paint flowers I find myself struggling with them the most. Their delicate shapes, shadow transitions and softness forces one to really be patient when painting. In the beginning I felt a sense of rush to complete this piece but realized I could only achieve what I wanted if only I paused and patiently worked through the process.

MATERIALS USED

Acrylic: red,blue, yellow, titanium white
Canvas: 30cm by 30cm (12' x 12')

THE PROCESS

The background of the canvas was covered with blues, then orange to help bring out depth to the paintings.
The rose
After layering the background I began layering the rose flower with titanium white acrylic and added pink (a mix of red and white). This took patience and many hours of layering over.
Melanin skin
Painting the skin was not as hard as the flower for me. I believe this is due to me practicing more on painting dark skin. Here I mixed red, blue and yellow to come up with the brown color. I added more yellow to lighten the skin tone and blue to darken the brown skin tone. I kept layering over until I got a smooth blended finish. After which I added highlights to areas of the skin with the brightest tone.

Below is a time-lapse showing progress.
